(Foreword) 'Neon signs that glow in the night sky, old-fashioned plaques on historical architecture, road and traffic signs, station information boards, billboards: all signs offering information that helps people along their way. We see a huge variety of signs everywhere in our daily lives. Recently, "barrier-free signs" implementing universal designs, such as Braille writing and sidewalk guideway lines, are on the rise, helping to create a barrier free society for all to enjoy. A "sign system" is set-up to design comprehensive signage that integrates such considerations required by this complex society. The sign system ensures that the signs not only provide information and guide the way, but also present the proper information in the proper place, making effective use of graphics, colors, and shapes.
The purpose of this publication is to serve as a reference for creators involved in flat or spatial design. This is a collection of not only Japanese works but also signage from all over the globe, resulting in a chance to see how signage is developed and implemented in other areas of the world. There has been very little published about this topic in recent years, thus the inclusion of works from a broad range of countries, including Brazil and Italy. You will find an exhaustive variety of patterns used in public, commercial, educational, medical, corporate, and exhibition facilities. In particular, you will find comprehensive sign systems for public facilities boasting features that provide information for all visitors, regardless of age, sex, nationality, etc.
