(Preface) 'Gerald Van Der Kaap is not unknown at the Stedelijk Museum. He has participated in several group exhibitions including 'The Arts for Television' (1987) organised with the VPRO, 'Great Activity - New Generations in Dutch Art' (1987/1988), 'Roots and Turns' (1988). Each of the three exhibitions focused on another aspect of Van Der Kaap's work: first the artist making a music-video for Dutch Television; in the second an artist who has won a place in the history of Dutch photography; and thirdly as an up-and-coming young Dutch artist occupying a niche between the various forms of plastic arts. He is also well known as a music maker (Save the Robots) and as publisher and editor of Zien magazine (nine issues, 1980-1986) and Blind magazine (two issues, 1989-1990). In short, he is an eclectic who has undergone far-reaching development within the confines of the medium which is most truly his own - namely photography. From staged photography, to black and white images, to computer generated images. And now, I am very pleased to have been able to invite Gerald Van Der Kaap for his - first - one man show at the Stedelijk.'
