NB Studio’s London Kerning was the first in the series, created in 2006 for the International Society of Typographic Designers. It served as the direct template and conceptual foundation for the later Milan version.

The Milan poster was originally commissioned by Wallpaper magazine in connection with their Milan Design Festival coverage. Titled “Milan l’è un gran Milan” (Milanese dialect for “Milan is a great Milan”), the work applies the same rigorous typographic reduction as its London predecessor.

Inspired by the dense, squeezed place-naming style of traditional city maps, NB Studio again stripped away all non-typographic elements—roads, boundaries, symbols—leaving only the tightly kerned lettering that follows the city’s streets and districts. The result is a bold, skeletal typographic portrait of Milan: a poetic reflection of how words, like its citizens, interlock and fit intricately into the urban fabric.

This approach, pioneered in the London piece, translates powerfully to Milan, celebrating the city’s confident, larger-than-life character in its own dialect while maintaining the pure typographic discipline established in the original London Kerning.

Their condition is ranked A to C, which include further sub-classifications of plus (+) and minus (-) in each case (e.g. A-, A, A+). Grade A: items are in excellent condition for their age. They are clean and display bright colour(s), show no sign of loss, and minimal creasing or other imperfections. Grade B: items are in good condition for their age. They are generally clean, yet may present minimal tears or loss, creasing folds and pin holes. Grade C: items are in poor condition for their age. They may suffer from soiling, fading or discolouration, in addition to more significant tears, loss, creasing.
