(Preface) "Koch and Knuttel invited us to spend a weekend in Gouda to design this series of visual impressions of the town. What excited us was that we had no preconceptions of what we were going to do nor what form our "portrait" would take.

We were fascinated by a living town, a mixture of its medieval past and the anomalies of the 20th century. The Town Hall, the focal point of Gouda, seemed to inspire so many images; a fairy tale castle, a collection of geometrical patterned shutters (an abstract painting in themselves), an ominous medieval structure at night, and, a stage set.

Everywhere we went there were bicycles; girls riding side-saddle, entire families on wheels, teenagers on motor bikes. We found a great variety of handsome building facades on the various streets and arranged them in the centre spread as Our Street". The people, the patterns of the cobble stones, the herring stalls, the reflected buildings in the canals and even the street names all vied for our attention. In the early evening, when little else could be seen, we were again struck by the arbitrary mixture of old and new in the sky-line of the town. Fletcher/Forbes/ Gill"
