(Introduction) 'IN ENGLAND in the 1930s, a de-signer, sadly now "unknown," drew a series of pictorial logos for the Spratts pet-food company, with each logo made up of the letters in the name Spratts. There was a cat, a bird, and a dog; but by far the most used version was the dog. It endured as a trademark for a long time and was certainly the first bit of graphic design that made any impression on me, coming into our home as it did on the cans of dog food we fed to our pet dachshund. That Spratts logo was the start of something small in my life usually about half an inch square, in fact.

Now, my thanks go to Stephen Kliment, who has shepherded this book through with a kind and understanding touch, beginning with his wonderful suggestion that Rose DeNeve should do a lot of the writing. Rose spent many hours interviewing me for the chapters on Time symbols, American Renewal, and the Radio Times work, then went away to write it all down and deliver her typescript exactly on time. (Others at Watson-Guptill need acknowledgment of their patience in waiting for the rest of the book!) It was a great pleasure to collaborate with a real professional...'
