(Introduction) 'The first edition of Marks, Symbols and Logotypes, covering the years 1973-1975, came out in 1976 twenty years ago. At the time we wondered if readers would buy it, but we've come this far. Along the way the title has changed, too. And it's still a long and troublesome title to say, in its entirety. So just what number edition is this one going to be? At some point along the way color publications took the forefront; everything included, this makes the fourteenth edition. We calculated the total number of works introduced in all these editions, and found exactly 33,686.

The number of designers and companies who have contributed works is also considerable. It used to be that we tried to thank each and every contributor individually, but... About ten years ago a certain career designer commented that every work presented had some value as reference. We haven't forgotten how happy that made us feel. We're probably using the height of the economic bubble as a reference point, but it seems that we launched the first color edition at that time, and in the "hop, step and jump" progress of these series, this book can be found in the "step" stage...'
