(Foreword) 'This book is intended to provide a general and informative guide to the purpose behind the graphic programme of a commercial enterprise, however small or great, and to indicate what shape such a programme can take. For reasons of space I have had to concentrate my efforts, and therefore intend to deal only with the essential points in a design programme of this kind. Because my material has been consciously simplified in this way, I hope it will also have become easy to read and understand, so that even those who are concerned with other aspects of design can profit by its contents as a complement to their own discipline or profession. And I would here include those who fall into the important cate- gory of economists. As an introductory point it is perhaps of interest to know that scientific research carried out in the field of business has shown that competent design is rational and justifiable in economic terms. This fact has been confirmed time and again both by large and small international companies which have in- vested, as a matter of policy and prestige, in a highly sophisticated design programme for their company 'image' and their plan of production.'
