(Preface) 'Trade marks and symbols as a branch of British design have so far not received the attention they deserve. This book, the first on the subject, shows the work of more than sixty contemporary designers in this field. Their designs have helped to bring a new look to industry and commerce and, in many cases, have become a part of our daily lives.

The 150 illustrations of marks and symbols, generously displayed, represent some of the most interesting achievements in trade mark design in the last few years. In several cases the drawings that preceded the finished design have also been included.

David Caplan and Gregory Stewart introduce their selection with a short history of the evolution of British symbol design from earliest times, through the Trade Mark Act of 1875 which established the first national registry of trade marks, to contemporary styles. They explain some of the earlier and more distant artistic influences, and their history has been illustrated with much original material.'
