In the 1950s and 1960s, Herbert Spencer roamed Europe, photographing for a Crete travel guide, an Irish wanderings diary, and other projects. He captured unique visual traits of diverse settings, from London’s City to Breton villages. These images, dubbed “expressive pattern,” debuted in Typographica, the magazine he founded and edited (1949–1967), and were later republished in Traces of Man.
