(Preface) 'To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Museum of Modern Art, Toyama in July 1991, we plan to hold "The 3rd International Poster Triennial in Toyama 1991". Since the Museum's opening in 1981, we have been engaged in collecting and introducing modern posters, both domestic and foreign. For the upcoming exhibition, we will expand our efforts further. To introduce the newest state and examples of world poster design, we have made an international open invitation and selected works from all over the world. Though this will be only the Museum's third triennale, following events in 1985 and 1988, the name "IPT" is known to designers worldwide.

In response to our international open invitation, we have received 2,666 applications from designers in 48 countries. Through a strict and impartial screening by the National Jury, 348 posters have been selected for the exhibition, to which 58 posters produced by the jurors have been adde d, for a total of 406 posters.

This event, as the only exhibition in Japan of posters selected through open international invita-tion, demonstrates high standards of poster design and provides a unique opportunity to view aspects of international culture, politics and economics. We are therefore confident that it will satisfy both designers and art lovers in general. we sincerely hope that this event will contribute not only to the development of international poster design, but to the promotion of international exchange as well.'
