Catalogue of an exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery, 4 April-6 May 1973.
(Preface) 'This exhibition - the first in this country to represent the new realist trend in the United States - is also the first Serpentine exhibition not devoted to the work of young British artists. Heating has been installed, we can plan a more or less year-round season, and so we decided to vary the programme. The art of the young and the relatively unknown will continue to occupy the time and space it did and possibly more, but the Serpentine will also present shows that focus on varying themes, media, countries and individuals of current interest.
Photo-Realism is one of the names given to the work of several young painters and a few sculptors, first in America (there was a seminal show at Vassar College in 1968) and now more inter-nationally. Last year's Documenta exhibition at Kassel, intended to illustrate differing concepts of reality in contemporary art, included a large and convincing section devoted to this kind of painting and sculpture. Meanwhile books and articles have been assembled to give an initially controversial phenomenon the respectability of recognized avant-garde status...'
