(Introduction) "Concentric lines frame, demarcate, decorate, and emphasize," as Abbott Miller writes in this catalogue. I am not sure whether introductions always fulfil their (sometimes lengthy) potential; nevertheless, they always try. The "simple, atavistic impulse to outline, to embellish, and to create patterns and ornament (the impulse to 'fill-in' blank space)," to quote the author again, is often at the root of the writer's intent which, in the logic of introduction = ornament, ornament = crime, introduction = crime, can be subject to justified criticism in the spirit of Adolf Loos.
This said, let us get straight to the point.
The exhibition and catalogue were created for the 23rd International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2008. We are honoured that Abbott Miller rose to the challenge of the Moravian Gallery to create a project reflecting the past and the present of graphic design.
I believe that the outcome of this collaboration confirms our decision to build the future of the Biennial not only on the competition show and the international symposium, but also on this kind of curated exhibition, which enables self-reflection on how the Moravian Gallery, as an art museum relates to graphic design.
