(Preface) 'Koichi Sato - The eye (together with its corresponding cerebral convolutions) has a memory of its own, more comprehensive and intricate than that for language. Correspondingly rich is the store of visual recollections. The designer, who must again and again come up with new visual creations, needs a particularly rich visual experience for his particularly receptive memory so as to have sufficient supply on hand. Characters, colors, forms, proportions that he can reassemble in his way or at his pace.

The series of editorial work entitled "the Beauty of Women in Japan" shows how Koichi Sato makes the most of this gift: he uses pictures from the "Japanese picture memory" and "recollection techniques" such as the foreground blurred and background focused composition or the detail as the whole (the lips) and the whole face as part of a still larger picture. He is a master of rhetoric, the high art of visual "speech," by heightening contrasts, opening, stirring, or disturbing associations.

With similar finesse, Koichi Sato uses his visual memory to convey messages intended to say traditional things in a new form. The fish swims in a kind of light which is seemingly reflected from the intense experience of Tokyo-Ginza neon, its luminous power is as unnatural as that of radioactivity made visible, the whole composition of picture, characters, and signature is as delicate and "classical" as wood block a print by Hiroshige.

Without knowing what Koichi Sato designs and produces every day, in constant provocation of clients' wishes and of "visual memory," his works are part of the recollectable supply of pictures of every designer.' Hiygh Quality, 9,1987
