(Introduction) 'These words are written in praise of room plants and about their cultivation and possible use in interior decoration. They are also written to encourage still further a revived interest in a favourite occupation of our forefathers. We have not yet reached the pitch of enthusiasm which these plants now arouse in the Scandinavian countries, and to a certain extent in Austria and Germany and in the USA. In fact so familiar are English visitors with these plants in their Danish or Swedish setting that they have mistakenly thought of them as native to those countries. The truth is, of course, that a great many of them were familiar in England and Scotland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In order to prove this point and also because the subject is not without value and interest for its own sake, a brief account of the old-fashioned taste for foliage and flowering plants would not be out of place here.'
