(Preface) 'In 1960 Edward Wright wrote that 'the heart of 20th century myth is the knowledge that each science, each activity is a part of all others.. After an architectural training Wright has been a painter, typographer, graphic designer and above all an explorer of language. He was once described as the only artist in England who has used communications as his theme and at the centre of his work has been a continuing speculation about the meeting point between the visual sign and the meaning it carries.

In the early 1950s Wright taught experimental typography at the Central School and went on to teach at the Royal College of Art and finally to become head of graphics at Chelsea. The unique nature of his example is recorded in this catalogue by the designers Trilokesh Mukherjee, Theo Crosby and Ken Garland, all of whom benefited from his guidance. We have also taken the opportunity of gathering together several pieces of writing by Edward Wright published in various journals over the years.

We are extremely grateful to Edward Wright for the time and patience he has devoted to this exhibition and to the design of its catalogue and publicity material. We have been helped throughout by the advice of Trilokesh Mukherjee who proposed the project to us. Our warm thanks are due to him, the other authors, lenders of works and everyone who has helped us in the research and preparation of the exhibition.'
