(Foreword) In the last six years Great Britain has been swept by an unprecedented wave of new building, and not all its best products are conspicuous or easy to visit. This year, moreover, is the occasion of the London Congress of the International Union of Architects, which will provide opportunities for critical comparison between building in Great Britain and in other parts of the world. These were among the reasons why the Arts Council and the Royal Institute of British Architects decided to hold in 1961 the present review of six years of architecture, and to those faced with the difficult task of placing their judgment on record the Arts Council wishes to express sincere thanks. The selectors were the Hon. Lionel Brett, Sir Hugh Casson, Mr John Killick, Mr John Piper, and Mr J. M. Richards. Mr Trevor Dannatt and Mr Alan Irvine designed the exhibition, while its organization was shared by Miss Monica Bromley, Assistant Secretary of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and Mr David Thomas, Assistant Director of Art to the Arts Council.
