ARK, a style and design journal created by RCA students (1950-1978), was part of an era of cultural transformation across fashion, film, television, advertising, newspapers and magazines. Such was the stature of ARK that it drew contributions from creative luminaries including Ralph Rumney, Lucio Fontana, Alison and Peter Smithson, Toni del Renzio and Reyner Banham. (Editorial) When a publication changes its appearance to the extent that ARK has with this issue, some explanation is necessary. The main reason for our new format is a technical one; you will know, of course, that the editorial staff is under constant change; the editor each year, the art editor and advertising manager each issue, and these facts alone dictate to a certain extent the character of the journal. Each art editor must be able to approach the task of design with the maximum of freshness and the minimum of precedent, and it is exactly this that we hope the revised format will enable he or she to do.
