(Introduction) 'With this edition, GRAPHIS ANNUAL is 21 years old. Only 21, one wonders? The distance between I952 and today seems a much longer span. It seems more like a century--a whole other world away. The many changes which have been bombarding us for these past twenty-odd years are too familiar to require further exposition from me. But two are worth noting in this context. In the world of 1952, to cite one of them, who would have dreamed that only 21 years later such useful products as a plastic bottle, an insecticide, an air-conditioner would come to represent urgent environmental problems for the industrial societies which have produced them and, indeed, for the planet as a whole?'
