(Preface) 'This publication has now appeared regularly for thirty years. To many readers the difference from one volume to the next may seem minimal, as though hardly anything were changing in the field of graphic design. This impression is misleading, for change is continuous and the small steps it takes in a year are not always very conspicuous. It is the same with the people around us: if we see them almost daily, they do not seem to alter much; but a comparison of a ten-year-old photograph with the present reality at once unmasks the transformation of time. Archaeologists know the same phenomenon in a different setting: if you walk across a cornfield, there is nothing to see but a uniform expanse; take a helicopter and fly over it, and it may well reveal quite clearly the outlines of an ancient Roman fortress.'
