Graphis Posters 83. The International Annual of Poster Art.

(Preface) 'As a means of communication the poster has held its place very successfully in our century. Always a challenge to the artist, it can also be a fascination experience for the observer, as Rudolph de Harak, author of our introduction, confirms in connection with a specific poster exhibition. For him one of the most important qualities of a good poster is its visual simplicity, which supplies just enough information to convey thoughts and ideas. A selection, even though made on the basis of strictly defined criteria, at the same time reveals how manifold the possibilities are for the designer, and how varied the interpretations. GRAPHIS POSTERS 83 presents on 200 pages (104 of them in colour) the work of hundreds of artists from all over the globe: advertising posters distinguished by a subtle eroticism (here posters from Japan predominate), by freshness, with and humour (with Savignac in the van) or by sheer aesthetic appeal (as in the Image posters for Ortis, Bayer and Müssig); poster series (such as those of Heinz Edelmann for the theatre) which must be suitable for use either alone or in concert; impressive and moving specimens from the area of the social and political poster, among them college leaving exercises by Polish students commenting on the situation of their country; and a vast array of others too multifarious to mention.'
