(Introduction) 'Probably no design movement of this century has added more architectural innovations to the contemporary landscape of Europe and America than that of the Bauhaus. Conceptualized with great precision by Walter Gropius the Staatliche Bauhaus was to open the world of the craftsman (and later industry and industrial techniques) to artist, sculptor, designer, and architect. Mies van der Rohe said of Gropius' work-"it was an idea rather than an institution, only an idea can spread so far." And easily the most significant single influence in development of Knoll International was that brilliant moment in design. The dialectic of the Bauhaus furnished the conceptual tools that Knoll was to put to such good use in the company's three decades of development.'
