(Translator’s Foreword) ‘This book, written in German, was first published in Basle, Switzerland, in 1935 under the title Typographische Gestaltung. It is extremely surprising that it has had to wait until now for publication in English - particularly since there are so few works in English expressing any philosophy of typography and no satisfactory typographer's manual. (Numerous books have appeared on a how to do it' level, mostly showing, by their own design, that the author did not know how to do it. The late Oliver Simon, who did know, wrote only an Introduction to Typography.)’
