(Preface) 'This book is the tangible result of the symposium design beyond Design: critical reflection and the practice of visual communication, that was held in the Jan van Eyck akademie in November 1997. Initiated by and organised under the supervision of Jan van Toorn, the symposium also marked his retirement as director. With an almost symbolic gesture, this was the moment when Jan van Toorn could realise a wish he had cherished for a long time: to start up a public debate on the actual opportunities for critical and/or dissident design practice.
The vitality of design was clear from the enormous interest on the part of the public. The symposium was attended by not only the established design world but also a young public from all over Europe. This was the fulfilment of another of Jan van Toorn's wishes, which always determined his dedication as director of the Jan van Eyck akademie: to initiate an exchange of ideas between different generations of design traditions from the Netherlands and abroad.'
