(Foreword) 'With Art 11'80, the second decade of existence has begun for the Basle Art Fair. It can, together with the exhibitors and the wide international circle of art lovers, look into the future full of optimism, for it has retained its inner verve and the flexibility for necessary adjustments, and over the years its power of attraction has thus continuously grown thanks to increased experience and to its success. This year it is particularly gratifying that apart from old-established galleries - to whom thanks are given here for their many years of loyalty - many former exhibitors have again found the way back, and that in addition the continued lively interest from new applicants has made a particularly large selection of first-class galleries possible. This positive outcome reflects the importance generally attached to the art fairs - above all to Art - but it also shows just how much this relatively young form of presentation has succeeded in prevailing next to the traditional media, and in becoming internationally recognized in the art world. At the start of the decade that lies before us, Art is appearing in a new costume with a redesigned poster and catalogue. With numerous supplements and references, the catalogue has gained in clarity, various graphic innovations also increase its readability. Its value thus increases, either as a work of reference for the contemporary art scene, or for preparing the Fair, or as an informative guide to the Fair or, last but not least, as an important compendium of the annual art event in Basle.
