(Preface) 'Of all the members of the Zurich School of Concrete Art, Carlo Vivarelli is the one most difficult to place. Not only his age, but also some important aspects of his work, put him closer to the founding generation, while his period of activity is in the time of the second generation. In this sense he is perhaps a "loner'.
At the time of the first generation of Concrete Art in Zurich, Vivarelli was known as a graphic artist of the first rank and of international significance. It was only later that he began to devote himself entirely to painting and sculpture. His complete works bear witness to an unwavering self-criticism and a pronounced artistic consistency. As Gottfried Honegger puts it, he is "never eccentric - always original?
Vivarelli is also known to a wider public through works in public ownership. These include the free sculpture "10 Elements" at the Hall of Zurich University and a chromium-steel sculpture, completed after his death, on the campus of the same university. In art on buildings Vivarelli extends the constructivist principles of Concrete Art to an integrated whole comprising the work and its surroundings and also drawing the viewer into the concept. In this way, Vivarelli gives Concrete Art a new dimension of relationship to reality and shows how he has remained steadfastly true to his artistic and ethical principles, which were already developed in his days as a graphic artist: with a "social engagement in design" and a "knowledge of the social significance of visual information"'.
