(From Unit Editions) 'In 2012, Unit Editions published Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer, 1918–1981. This deluxe edition—encased in a numbered, limited edition presentation box—quickly sold out. The success of the deluxe edition prompted the release of Herb Lubalin: American Graphic Designer, 1918–1981—The Compact Edition in December 2013.
After graduating from Cooper Union in New York, Herb Lubalin joined the booming advertising world of the 1950s—the Mad Men era. But he soon outgrew advertising and set up his own design studio with the aim of pursuing his interest in typography, lettering, and editorial design.
The Herb Lubalin studio was responsible for numerous classic logos and logotypes, many of which have entered the design canon. With his team of lettering artists Lubalin was responsible for a trio of typefaces that have become classics of 20th century typography: Avant Garde Gothic, Serif Gothic, and Lubalin Graph.
He was also an editorial designer of great originality. His work in magazines such as Eros, Avant Garde, and Fact, place him at the forefront of innovative art directors and designers whose role went beyond the creation of page layouts. Due to his expressive use of typography and his skill at storytelling through photography – often with an edge of social commentary—Lubalin was an early proponent of the designer as author.'
