(Introduction) 'In any live printing house the type specimen book will begin to be out of date within a month of publication, and the problem of keeping all users abreast of both additions and deletions has never been solved to everyone's satisfaction. Our records at Aylesbury, admittedly incomplete, show that at least ten editions of the Hazells type specimen book were issued between 1874 and 1955, an average of one every eight years, and it is an interesting commentary on the lack of interest in typography and type faces at that time that one of these editions was sufficient for the whole period 1880-1909.
The growth of the Hazell Sun Group in recent years and the increasing cooperation between our various houses has prompted us to attempt to unify the independent books produced in the past by Hazell Watson & Viney at Aylesbury, Sun Printers, Watford, and The Sidney Press, Bedford, and to show in one volume all the display material held in the various composing departments of the Hazell Sun Group. The loose-leaf system has been chosen for two reasons: first, that designers may temporarily remove any leaf from the book for use as a tracing sheet, and second, that the book may constantly be brought up to date by the addition of new leaves or the revision of existing ones...'
Condition: Very Good. All titles are used and show shelf ware consistent with age. Light rubbing and soiling to cover. Light tanning to inner pages.
