(Introduction) 'Signs, though linked to both architecture and typography, are a separate field of design. They offer wide opportunities for lively and original work, but it is still a rather neglected field. Signs are less permanent than buildings, they receive little care in design, and no school provides any specific training for architectural lettering. If such a course existed it would have to insist on the primary considerations of function common to most modern design disciplines. It would also have to stress the importance of exploiting the opportunities presented by the site, for though road and traffic signs may well have to follow definite, fortunately recognisable formulae, the signs of commerce have no such limitations. Here there are pleas for brashness or good manners, for architectural or anti-architectural signs.'
