(Preface) 'Werkplaats Typografie / ArtEZ Institute of the Arts is a design school which was established by Dutch designers, Karel Martens and Wigger Bierma in 1998.
After its establishment, it has drawn a great attention as an alternative educational method of design that put a stress on real practice and self-initiated project as opposed to an hollow and superficial way of the current major design education. Werkplaats Typografie's belief in real practice is congenital as the meaning of its name "typography workplace" self expresses.
Thus it is the essential core of the educational method of this institute that it makes their students experience the essential body of the designs process while tutors and students are completing works by participating in the real projects as co-workers. Together with Karel Martens, Armand Mevis, Paul Elliman, and Maxine Kopsa are holding their positions at Werkplaats Typografie as tutors and 14 students from various countries are studying at it now. For the last ten years, 49 graduates were delivered from the school.'
