(Preface) 'This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Tokyo Typedirectors Club. During these 10 years we have focused on typography with an intense passion and we are beginning to see, at the end of our first decade, a clear picture of the many hurdles to be cleared. We see that at the very core of all the challenges that lay ahead, are language and written characters. An expression of "the vibrant human spirit" is crystallized in our writing systems, to be constantly conveyed to others.
What we should seriously contemplate at this time is the direction Japanese typography should take as we move toward the 21st century. In other words, how will the Japanese language and Japanese culture respond to the changes in the global community in these rapidly changing times...'
