(Preface) 'The New Art of Making Books by Ulises Carrión, published thirty-eight years ago (Kontexts no. 6-7, 1975), contained a series of radical proposals and statements that emphasised the formal qualities of the book and the performative nature of our interaction with it. Today, a hundred years after the publication of Zang Tumb Tumb (1914) and the book edition of Un coup de des jamais n'abolira le hasard (1914), half a century after the Daily Mirror Book (1961), Topographie Andécdotée du Hasard (1962) and Twentysix gasoline stations (1963), it is also nearly thirty years after the launch of the Mac (1984) and Windows (1985), twenty-three since the creation of the World Wide Web and HTML (1990), twenty years post the PDF file format (1993), fifteen since Google (1998), six since Kindle (2007), three years after the iPad (2010)... The possibilities of the book, its form and content, and its relation with the reader, are constantly questioned, challenged and transformed in an increasingly digital environment. Carrión's statements, like the work by the MA Book Arts students documented in this catalogue, interrogate what constitutes a book and explore the essence of the 'New Art'.'
