(Preface) 'Studies in Design is one of the most important and influential of Victorian manuals on the decorative arts. A scholarly work, its writing was prompted by Dresser's desire to promote an understanding of decoration as a unique discipline regulated by knowledge and taste. He was influenced by the great designer Owen Jones, and by oriental, particularly Japanese art in which he admired the economy of line and colour. His primary aim when teaching his students and preparing the excellent colour illustrations for this work, was to bring about a better standard of decoration in interior design, and to provide useful ideas for manufacturers of decorated objects. As a successful commercial designer, he had an extensive knowledge of the applied arts and, working in conjunction with major manufacturing firms, produced designs for glass, silver, cast iron, and many other media. His extensive knowledge of botany gave him a scientific interest in the functions of form, and the thoroughness of his approach in Studies of Design must be partly attributed to this...'
