(Preface) 'This book, with an introductory essay to set the scene, re-enacts some 50 years of poster art. The 124 full-colour plates reflect with a particular directness the development both of the poster itself and of a tradition in quality set firmly on course by Frank Pick. Variety is a keynote both in style and subject, for the first aim of the poster designer is impact. Thus it is no coincidence that McKnight Kauffer should rub shoulders with Fred Taylor, Rex Whistler with Graham Sutherland, Hans Unger with Laura Knight, and there is a detectable policy of encouraging a new technique or vision without sacrificing standards of design. How revolutionary was the work of Clive Gardiner or Edward Bawden set against the accepted poster art of their time, and how wayward the fancy of Betty Swanwick or John Burningham!
This is public art, produced for the street rather than the gallery, to interest, amuse and essentially to persuade the Londoner and his visitors. While this book is a lively and colourful record for the expert and the connoisseur it is also a treasury for that much maligned critic, the man who knows what he likes.'
