(Preface) 'CONTINUING its policy of showing the work of contemporary French draughtsmen, IMAGE includes, in this issue, reproductions of lithographs by M. André Marchand, who has made a notable series of illustrations for Gide's Nourritures Terrestres and books by other French masters.

IMAGE also includes examples of recent drawings made by Mr Edward Ardizzone for publishers in this country and the USA, with a special coloured lithographic inset of examples of his work for the Limited Editions Club in New York.

The wood-engraver represented in this issue is Mr Blair Hughes-Stanton, whose work would be ranked by many critics with that of Eric Gill and Eric Ravilious in its general influence upon the technique of wood-engraving in this country during this century. By the courtesy of the Gregynog Press, examples of his remarkable engravings made for the limited editions printed and published by that Press are included. Never before has such a definitive selection of Blair Hughes-Stanton's work been shown.

The younger generation is represented by the unusual ceramics of Steven Sykes. A recent exhibition of these ceramics at the Galerie Apollinaire was extremely successful, and Mr Hugh Wakefield compares the designs with work now being done in France.

Finally, there is a theoretical fragment by Mr Laurence Housman concerning designs commissioned by him from Mr Gordon Craig.'
