Presidents Introduction

'If you missed them in the flesh, this issue contains the essence of the first four lectures in my series which packed the Royal Geographical Society to the gunwales. And what a diverse group of individuals. First we had the enigmatic collective, Tomato, who resolutely refused to be drawn into any discussion about the meaning of their work, leaving the audience both frustrated and elated in equal measures. Sixties icon David Bailey cast aside his carefully prepared speech to settle for a thoroughly entertaining stream of consciousness which was cuttingly wicked and punctuated by his infectious laughter. Our brains were assaulted by the rapier-like intellect of director Peter Greenaway whose ability to pull together a myriad of concepts and rapidly convert them into lucid and demanding propositions was masterful, leaving most of us feeling distinctly lacking in the brain department.

Finally, we had Vaughan Oliver who preceded his lecture by showing what he considered to be his most creative piece of work to date - the birth of his son - on video, in water! After this he held everyone spellbound with his relaxed, conversational style unveiling a remarkable body of work.

It gave me enormous pleasure to look around the auditorium during the course of these lectures to witness such a diverse cross-section of people, all clearly enjoying themselves.

And then, of course, there was the awards night, but that's another story which could easily fill this entire issue. All I can say is that I now have an inkling of what it must feel like to be Salman Rushdie.' Mike Dempsey
