Presidents Introduction
'Somehow the world looks different from the top of a 38 bus. For a start you are aware of just how shabby things are. The rubbish, the graffiti, the fumes, the homeless trying to hold a life together from a cardboard box. And, as the streets flash by, you become ashamed of just how much bad design there is around. And I make my regular pledge not to add to this visual pollution. The work of our members proves that there is another way. The power we hold to persuade, move or simply raise a smile should never be underestimated. In our own way we help to shape the world and we have the ability to shape a better world. It is vital that this work is seen and applauded around the globe. It will inspire others to question what they are doing and to try harder.
Over the next two months more than two hundred of our respected colleagues will sit in judgement on the year's outpouring from the creative community. They will probably be looking at your work. You're wondering will it get in? Well I hope it does. To those judges who hold the elusive key I say be generous, broad-minded and please leave your prejudices at the door. Forget the arguments about style versus ideas. The truth is fantastic work is being done in both camps. You just have to be big enough to recognise it. Happy judging.' Mike Dempsey
