(Preface) 'It should be a matter of pride that the standard of vernacular lettering in Britain is so high. We are one of the few nations to have a distinctive and distinguished tradition of fine letter-forms in vernacular use. One aim of this book is to tease out the many strands that are interwoven in this tradition, and to reveal how even the basic styles have been given countless personal interpretations while still retaining their integrity.

Tombstones, railway lettering, shop fascias, street-names, notices - all offer evidence of a flourishing craft of lettering without which our man-made environment would be the poorer...'
