Limited edition. Armin Hofmann's Farbe/Color (2012) explores the Swiss designer's profound engagement with color through teaching and art. Drawing from decades at Basel, Yale, Ahmedabad, and Brissago (1954–1990), it features student exercises on color nuances, Hofmann's sketches, and his 1989–1999 silkscreen portfolios. Essays and student recollections illuminate his interactive, perception-honing methods.

(Introduction) 'For Armin Hofmann, lecturing at design schools and working as a freelance graphic artist went hand in hand: his activities as an educator invariably provided inspiration for his own work. Hofmann viewed teaching as a productive interplay between him and his students. His approach was not doctrinaire: rather, it centered on the students' engagement with their own experiences and abilities, so enabling them to hone their individual perception of design issues.

In specially created exercises, the students practiced mixing, observing and juxtaposing the finest nuances of color. The ways in which color could be changed were explored in terms of gradation, temperature and intensity. The exercises thus enabled the students to understand color notes within a given image context.

During his many years as a teacher, Armin Hofmann accumulated a treasure-trove of experiences and findings on the subject of color. Following his retirement, he continued to work on various color compositions using serigraphic techniques. Between 1989 and 1999, he produced 20 silkscreen portfolios each containing 12 compositions, which he describes as an «account» of his pedagogical activities.

This publication focuses on Hofmann's lessons in color at the Basel School of Design in Switzerland, the Yale University School of Art in New Haven, USA, the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad, India, and at the Summer Program in Brissago, Switzerland, between 1954 and 1990. After a foreword from Dorothea Hofmann, it presents examples of work by students on specific set exercises, a collection of Hofmann's sketches, and the silkscreen port-folio. Finally, in «On my Silkscreen Portfolio, Armin Hofmann offers an insight into his thinking and his method...'
