(Foreword) 'In the summer of last year the Designers & Art Directors Association, London put on the exhibition Design & Art Direction '63 intended to be the first of an annual series of exhibitions which would present the best graphic design and advertising art current in Britain. This exhibition, was seen in the course of its two showings in London by no less than 25,000 people. To most of this large audience the exhibition was, inevitably and quite rightly, of transient interest: many others, and particularly those professionally concerned with design and advertising, regretted that no illustrated record of the exhibition was issued. The committee of the 1964 exhibition was accordingly charged with the responsibility not only of organising the exhibition but also of preparing the publication of a fully illustrated record of the show.
