(Preface) 'Book jackets first appeared during the first half of the nineteenth century. For a long period their function was purely protective, but in modern times they have developed into a powerful and attractive sales factor. Indeed, their use for marketing and publicity is now of first importance, and they are frequently reinforced by a transparent lamination in order to prolong their life. More than ever before, too, jackets offer scope for all the latest artistic and technical trends, from Pop art and Op art to photographic devices and the wide repertoire of the modern typographer. The same is true of record sleeves, whose history is so much shorter. For both jackets and sleeves, the designer's aim is basically similar: to express the contents of a book or record in visual terms, within a limited space and a predetermined shape. The design must also be effective, and the lettering clearly legible, at a distance - for example, in a shop window...'
