(Preface) 'The selection of the best-looking Swiss books of 1960 was made in Spring 1961, and twenty-two received awards. Of these sixteen were published in German-speaking Switzerland and six in French-speaking Western Switzerland. Four of the works chosen belonged to the general literature category, while scientific literature and textbooks were represented by five titles. As every year, art and photo books formed the largest group, with six titles, though their superiority is no longer as conspicuous as in some previous years. Four books for children and young people and three bibliophile editions completed the list of award winners.
The selection was made on the same principle as in previous years. The German-language publications were chosen on the basis of the stocks of the Swiss Wholesale Book Co. Works not available in Olten, in particular the French-Swiss books, were submitted by the publishing houses for judging. The actual selection was made by the judges in several stages by the process of elimination.'
