(Preface) 'The catalogue of books receiving awards once in a year furnishes an opportunity not only to take note of the result produced under considerable pressure of time by the Jury during its 2-day meeting but also to subject its findings to a critical review. This holds true not only for the general public but also for the Jury itself, which strives to arrive at a fair and balanced conclusion but which, like any other human institution, cannot lay claim to infallibility. The composition of the Jury ensures, however, that no special trends or interests can become a dominant factor. This year the Jury, after four years in office, was newly elected by the Federal Department of the Interior and enlarged by two additional members, but remains largely unchanged in all other re-spects. It met in Berne from February 26 to 28, 1976. Mr. R. Büchler (Basie), a very esteemed member, was replaced by Mr. H. Fleischhacker, also from Basle. Due to the fact that the newly elected representative of the Swiss Graphics Union, Mr. M. Jaegle from Ascona, was abroad, his place during the deliberations of the Jury was taken by his deputy, Mr. F. Hitz (Nuss-baumen). Dr. h.c. W. Jäger (Berne) attended as a newly appointed representative of the Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association...'
