(Foreword) 'The poster is a popular and useful form of art that has a prime place in our visual culture. This is the first exhibition devoted to a survey of poster art in Australia and is drawn from the National Gallery's unrivalled holdings in this area.

Our extensive collection of Australian posters numbers over 5,000 items and spans more than one hundred years, from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. Posters produced by alternative groups primarily concerned with social and political issues constitute a major strength of the collection. As a matter of policy, particular attention is given to ensuring national representation, and works from all states and territories of Australia are collected.

The collection was initiated in 1973 by James Mollison, Founding Director of the Gallery, with the acquisition of a group of posters from the Tin Sheds, Sydney. Subsequent acquisitions include a number of major archives of posters from the 1970s to the 1990s by poster-making groups such as Another Planet, Chameleon, Earthworks, Lucifoil, Megalo and Redback. Since 1982 the Gordon Darling Australasian Print Fund has enabled major acquisitions of contemporary posters. The collection has been enriched also by numerous gifts over the last decade from artists, poster-making groups and other individuals...'
