Stewart Johnson, the Museum's Design Curator, discusses the imperatives of American poster art as it reflected succeeding styles and influences: the arrival of French lithographic art at the turn of the century, the influx of European refugee artists in the 1930s, the impact of two world wars, and the social protest movements of the postwar years. This book was originally prepared for the national museums of modern art in Kyoto and Tokyo to accompany an exhibition organised under the auspices of The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
