(Introduction) 'This book accompanies an exhibition of recent work by emerging Dutch designers; because the high-profile studios of the 1980s have been well-covered in the American press, the curators chose to present new work which has not been seen much outside the Netherlands. The young, independent figures featured in this project are making their way in a culture which is exceptionally hospitable towards design. Holland has a long history of artistic invention, religious and political tolerance, and active engagement in the development of modern publishing; more recently, the alliance of Holland's largely socialized public sphere with its prosperous private sector has nurtured a profound care for the visual environment that is perhaps unmatched by any other Western country. The government is a major supporter of design, through grants for experimental work and through contracts for government publications— it is more common to think of such agencies in the Netherlands as "commissioners" than "clients," rather as one would describe a patron of the fine arts in the US. The Netherlands' remarkable public commitment to design (together with the persistent sales efforts of designers) has encouraged private institutions to employ challenging graphics in their house styles and publications as well, yielding a visual landscape that is as varied as the land is flat.'
