(Preface) 'Typography: design and practice has developed from John Lewis's stimulating Typography: basic principles which was published in the early 1960's. The first part of this book follows the same pattern, with an intriguing description of the influences in art and design that have shaped modern typography, with particular emphasis on the effects on typography of the work of William Morris and of the Bauhaus typography workshop on the one hand and of the modern movements of painting and design, such as Futurism, Vorticism, Dada and de Stijl on the other.
The rest of the book deals with the practicalities of the typographer's craft in the light of the changes in process and typesetting that have taken place over the last dozen years or so. The complexities of the various methods of photosetting are described with clarity and in a language that anyone can understand.
John Lewis writes in his introduction 'that all is not lost if typographers remember that their job is to communicate or at least to provide a channel of communication between author and reader. The manner in which they present their typographic message is the essence of this book'.
John Lewis is a well known book designer, who has also written extensively on the graphic arts; his books include Printed Ephemera, The Twentieth Century Book and Anatomy of Printing. He is a Fellow of the Society of Industrial Artists and Designers and was for many years the tutor in typography at the Royal College of Art.'
