(Preface) 'There is no accepted definition of the term industrial design'. At its narrowest it is used as a synonym for product design; at its widest as covering all kinds of design from typography to machine tools. In this book the words are taken as applying to the activity of designing goods which will be mass produced and sold on the mass market. The aim is to make the words describe a characteristic set of conditions - related to society and methods of production - rather than to any particular type of product. Thus the book is not directly about hand-made furniture, but it is about machine-made furniture, it is not about racing cars, it is about the Mini. Of course this is an arbitrary division; handwork and craftsmanship affect mass production and vice versa, but the problem this book discusses is industrial design and the community in the contemporary world, and here mass production for a mass market is the key element.'
