(Preface) 'WELCOME to The Nose, a publication produced a couple of times a year by some graphic designers in New York who are committed to presenting the reader with substantial and thoughtful content of a socially redeeming nature. We favor, however, levity as a welcome relief for the abundance of pomposity in the world of the written word. Each issue will take on a different form as suggested by the material. The written content is always lifted (we get permission first, of course). Our motto is "The Nose, for those who knows." Issue No. 1 is now in your hands. If you are not on our mailing list and want to get future copies of The Nose, please send $10 for the next four issues at the address below.'

(Introduction) 'Since the majority of U.S. states have reinstituted capital punishment in the past two decades, it's become even more essential that we reevaluate the right and wrong of the law for ourselves.

The Quaker Vigil Against the Death Penalty is held weekly in Brooklyn, New York. Besides standing in worshipful silence, Friends hand out flyers the headline of which sets up a conundrum: 'Why do we kill people for killing people? To show them killing people is wrong.' About 70 percent of passersby generally take the brochures, appearing to open minded, wanting to know more. Around ten percent are belligerent: They do not hold back. "If the guy killed someone, he should be killed too." is a familiar refrain often accompanied by a look of hostility or disgust How much do we question our judicial system or our values when it comes to capital punishment? Polls consistently show that 75-80 percent of all Americans agree with the death penalty. We've written this issue of The Nose for those who may or may not be in that majority, but at any rate, aren't quite sure what to believe: and like those pedestrians in Brooklyn, are open minded, wanting to know more.

The main article in this issue of The Nose is Christopher Hitchens' Scenes from an Execution which originally appeared in the January, 1998 issue of Vanity Fair. We thank him for allowing us to reprint it in its entirety. In researching the articles that were available on the subject, Hitchens' piece was by far the most thorough, thoughtful and well-crafted...'
