(Preface) 'Events can now be seen, while they happen, by millions of spectators who watch them without actual participation. News of vital discoveries, of inventions and of technological developments is communicated with speed and urgency. Abundance is connected with obsolescence-as we buy the new model we have the uncanny feeling that it is possibly already out-of-date.
Computers are reading type without the flicker of an eyelid. Satellites transmit messages from space to a machine on the earth, both sender and receiver almost independent of any human agency. Sight, hearing and memory have been outdistanced by machines-concepts of time and space are being revised radically... while we the initial creators of this ever accelerating process-remain biologically much the same.
What do we really know how do we react to a new condition in which scientific research is being carried on extensively in areas below and above our visible spectrum range?'
