(Preface) 'Cipe Pineles played a pioneering role in the development of graphic design during the era in which the field was just beginning to define itself. In 1930 Pineles embarked on a career that would span nearly sixty years and take her to the upper echelons of American graphic design. From an apprenticeship with the legendary Dr. M. F. Agha at Condé Nast, she went on to art direct Glamour, Seventeen, Charm, and Mademoiselle, which made her the first independent American woman art director. Pineles left magazine work to establish an independent design practice and to begin a teaching career at Parsons School of Design that would continue without pause for twenty-five years. The first female member of the New York Art Directors Club and the first woman admitted to the club's Hall of Fame, Pineles was posthumously awarded the AIGA Medal in 1996.
Here is the first full account of the life of this extraordinary woman, who not only gained recognition for her own work but shared the stage with two husbands prominent in design as well. The record reveals a woman who played many roles-immigrant, plucky career girl, wartime wife, struggling professional, editorial team member, working mother, widow, design partner, teacher, lover, friend, and colleague. With an unflinching eye for detail, Martha Scotford expertly weaves the story of Cipe Pineles within the larger context of the political, cultural, and economic era in which she worked. She also allows readers a glimpse into the lives of the individuals who populated the design community of that time.
Based on research materials from the Pineles Archives at Rochester Institute of Technology and on interviews with family members, friends, and colleagues of Pineles, this book reproduces hundreds of Pineles's magazine layouts and other design work, family photographs, and personal books, drawings, and paintings, bringing into sharp focus Pineles's life and her pioneering work and methods.'
